Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to question certain calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
