The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
